Ingrid Betancourt is a Colombian activist and politician. She is one of the most revered figures in Colombia, and was for six years among the world's longest-serving political prisoners. Her kidnapping by members of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels in 2002 sparked one of the biggest media events in history, with public figures such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton and then French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin playing key roles in her release from captivity on July 2, 2008In February 2010, she announced her candidacy to represent Colombia as its next vice president. Betancourt was born in Bogotá. Her father, Jorge Betancourt Snr, was a lawyer who married María Luisa Rodríguez. The couple had three children: Jorge Jr, Ingrid and Nadia. After graduating from high school in 1974 with a 4.0 GPA (), she studied languages at the Universidad del Rosario, earning a bachelor's degree with honors after five years of study. She then left for France to study literary criticism at the Sorbonne where she learned French and published her first book "La Realidad Sentimental" (The Sentimental Reality). She later worked as reporter for the Colombian edition of "Marie Claire". In 1990, Betancourt began working as an advisor for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She then traveled across Colombia in the Peace Caravan for Democracy and Human Rights, visiting many towns and cities in support of human rights and the victims of atrocities committed by drug-trafficking and guerrilla groups. On her return to Bogotá in 1993, she founded and directed the NGO "Corporación Colectivo de Abogados José Alvear Restrepo" (CCAJAR), an organization dedicated to promoting human rights. Her next project was founding a center that would gather records on massacres, disappearances and other human rights violations that had occurred over the past decades. In November, one of the guerrillas that kidnapped her in 2002, Colombian journalist Jorge Torres Victoria, is killed during a military operation near Bogotá.In 2000 she is named Person of the Year by "Reader's Digest" for having "helped to open the country’s eyes," and in 2001 she received a Human Rights Award from Harvard University. In 2002 Betancourt was invited by French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin to lecture at the French National Assembly. In 2002 Ingrid Betancourt was kidnapped from her home by members of Colombian guerrilla group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC). She was threatened with death unless the Colombian government released FARC's imprisoned guerrillas. Her kidnapping sparked international media frenzy; public figures such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton and then French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin played key roles in her release from captivity on July 2, 2008.On December 3, 2002 she was named one of seven "Women Heroes" by the U.S.-based "Newsweek" magazine; they were chosen by a team of reporters who decided that each had made "a genuine difference in the world". Other women honored that year included Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Shirin Ebadi, Oprah Winfrey and Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
